Ng Wah Lok
Wah Lok

I have observed the Malaysian Christian music scene for 22 years and I cannot say that I am happy with what I see. In fact, I am rather disappointed most of the time. Most Malaysian churches are contented to use songs from Hillsongs or Integrity Music for their worship services. Very few Malaysian Churches use their own original songs. Why aren’t Malaysian songs birthed in Malaysian Churches and eventually reach a global audience ? The fact is that Malaysians themselves rarely support their own recordings.

My vision is to change this mind set and bring Malaysian songs to a global audience. The albums featured under Malaysian Praise may not have reached the recording standards set by Integrity Music but I believe in the years to come, very good Malaysian albums will be produced and these will eventually reach a global audience.

  SHINING STARS by WahLok

Shining Stars is WahLok's second album. WahLok has emerged as an anointed song writer who captures moments of history in songs. The title track of his first album "Every Time I Pray", written in 1981 has touched millions of lives across Asia.

Shining Stars again contains some very touching songs. The title track "Shining Stars" is a very devotional song, written for the graduating students of Tung Ling Seminary. The song calls us live our lives ablaze for Jesus, a shining star for His glory. Another touching song in the album is "She moves her feet to dance" WahLok wrote this song about a girl in his church, named Judith, who fell sick and was totally paralyzed. The church fasted and prayed. Miraculously, Judith recovered. He attributes the healing to the intense prayer of the church.

The song "Beside You" was written in 1983. WahLok wrote this song for his friend Leslie Koch who was dying of colon cancer. As a church, they stood with Leslie with prayer and fasting until he passed away at a very young age. This song encourages us to stand with our friends who are terminally ill.

"Unheard Voices" is a song with a powerful message about the needs of the poor. WahLok says the poor are never heard. So are the children sold to prostitution or babies who are aborted. This song carries a message which he hopes will convict people to remember that there is a world out there with great needs.

Shining Stars is indeed an album which contains songs with powerful messages.

  Drunk Before Dawn, The Musical
by SIB (Sidang Injil Borneo) KL
  Drunk Before Dawn, The Musical

In the early 1900s, Borneo was a mysterious land, a huge island in the South China Sea alive with stories of wild men, headhunters and the White Rajahs. It was against this backdrop that the story of SIB began, and Drunk before Dawn, The Musical was set.

Drunk before Dawn, The Musical is a showcase of young Malaysian talents, with composers, orchestrator, playwright and lyricists all under 25. Featuring an entire cast and live orchestra of over 80 people from all walks of life, from as young as 7 to 60 years old, from mummy's boys to managing directors of multi-national firms, the musical was staged to standing ovations at four performances in PJ Civic Centre from 9 th - 11 th December 2004 to over 4000 people.

But more than a glamorous display of vocal, musical talents, drama prowess and special effects, the musical was a celebration of the fortitude of Christian brotherhood. Nothing pleases God more than an army of His, moving constantly in a unified direction, fulfilling their destiny and His purpose. Drunk Before Dawn was a testimony to that, to SIB's resilience as an effective army that resonates God's grace and mercies.
From the time the composers, orchestrator and lyricists from SIB KL sat down to compose the 14 awe-inspiring song and music, to the cast who willingly gave their time for the cause by surrendering 4 months of their lives to rehearse 5 times a week, and the resilience of the producer, directors and departmental heads in herding such a large group of people into a singular focus – it could only be God.

And God has transformed their wonderful sacrifices into lives touched.

Today, SIB has gone beyond the shores of Borneo. In just under 10 years, SIB now has 35 churches in Peninsular Malaysia. SIB KL is the sole English-speaking congregation with a singular mission to be Seekers of God, Inspired to Serve, Building People.

On 5th December 2004, SIB KL celebrated its 10 th Anniversary in Peninsular Malaysia by hosting a grand dinner for 2000 people at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. The senior pastor, Dr Chew Weng Chee challenged those present to press on and take the next decade with a renewed passion. The highlight of the night was when the musical Drunk before Dawn, was staged In Concert to a standing ovation of 2000 people.

Indeed, Drunk Before Dawn which will inevitably put Malaysia on the world map of musicals, is all set to influence the nations, impacting generations.

Joanne – Glory be to God (Hokkien Praise)
Joanne – Glory be to God (Hokkien Praise)

This is a rare recording of praise and worship songs in the Hokkien language (a dialect of the Mandarin language). There are 10 songs in the album, 9 of which were written songs by Joanne herself. One song in the album was written by Lourdes Dass. Joanne sung all the lead vocals herself. The album was produced by Charles Oh.

Joanne worships at Calvary Charismatic Centre, Petaling Jaya. She sings regularly at old folks home, lunch meetings and churches. God has given her a great compassion and burden to reach the lost and Joanne has used her music to reach especially those with deep needs. Although she is married with 3 children, she remains faithful to God in serving with the gift of music that God has given to her. Amazingly, Joanne can sing English, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and Hokkien songs.

  Through The Rain

Through The Rain
Silver Linings  Only In The Dark  The Sun Will Shine Again

A Compilation EP by Oops! Asia artists – Patrick Leong, Liang, Juwita Suwito & Altered Frequency

It all started a couple of days after the Asian Tsunami rocked the coasts of the Indian Ocean
. Moved by the thousands of lives that were lost and millions more who were plunged into desperate circumstances, Patrick Leong penned the song ‘Through the Rain' with the following a message…

“For comfort and peace in this moment of grief
Look above, beyond the hills… there's a light you can find

In this moment of need, there's Someone who heals
To walk you through the rain with His loving embrace”

Patrick Leong had his first single, ‘Angel Tears' released by YTL after he opened Pavarotti's Concert in Pangkor Laut as a tribute to victims of the September 11 incident which occurred in 2001. In 2003, he wrote ‘Open Arms', for survivors of the Bali bomb blast. The song was recorded in his debut solo album, ‘For Your Love', released in June the same year.

This time, other label mates from Oops Asia decided to come alongside and contribute their own songs to what was to become the ‘Through The Rain' Compilation EP. The concept of a ‘hope-through-rough-times' themed EP had been conceived months ago, but it wasn't until now that the need became evident. Each of the artists had gone through their own difficult phases and had written songs in response to those dark nights, which they wanted to share with the world in her time of shock and anguish.

One of the songs came to be during a full moon, but a dark night nonetheless for singer-songwriter-rapper-(who also plays the keys) Liang , a relatively ‘new name' in the music industry. His lively personality, even as he describes himself as a person who's doin' what he loves doin', may camouflage the deep-thinkin' side of the lad who so aptly wrote…

“Cos life without the pain renders joy of worthless gain cos we know not
how to appreciate having not experienced walking through the narrow lane.
If we rage against the flow, our fruits of labour time will show, we will grow…”

He fused his experience with his urban/r&b/hip-hop style of music while tinkering at the piano, taking in the calming effect of a nearby lake. The result was ‘Silver Linings', a song about learning to look at the brighter side of things and pressing on in spite of the odds.

Another response to tough circumstances is simply to learn from it. Positive dependence, despite the barrage of messages exhorting us to be in dependent, was the magic pill discovered by Juwita Suwito. The vocal coach for Malaysian Idol, who is slowly but surely gaining recognition in the region as a versatile singer-songwriter, decided to contribute Track #2 from her recently released debut solo album ‘Brand New World'. “All too often we try to get on with life our own way. We try to get to our destination using our self-drawn roadmaps. And it isn't until we're in the dark that we almost reluctantly flail our arms about, and discover that a hand's been waiting there all this while to lead us through a better path,” says Juwita when talking about what inspired her to write ‘ Only In The Dark' . She continues, “And imagine… that's the One who single-handedly created the universe… wouldn't He have a better view of things?” she chuckles.

Incidentally, it's the same hand that reaches down and wipes the tears away in 6-man band Altered Frequency 's catchy edgy-retro-rock tune, and says…

“Don't worry, trust in me, I can see
The Sun Will Shine Again
… you can smile again”.

This song adds a different dimension to the music in Altered Frequency's debut album ‘Exalt'. Hear it once and it will ring in your mind even hours later.

Singer-guitarist-songwriter Andy Yeoh relates his inspiration behind the song:

“Many years ago, I saw dark storm clouds covering the sky, and any light from the sun had been covered up by the mighty clouds, like a huge blanket over a lamp. The mood was dark and depressing… Then I began to see, after a while, it stopped raining, and the dark clouds beginning to part. And as they parted, the sky became brighter and brighter. Rays of light began to penetrate the clouds. Before long, the majestic sun came out in full glory, and illuminated the atmosphere. Light has returned. Hope… is alive!

I began to think about life and how we sometimes go through tough situations – like a storm that comes and floods your life with difficulties and problems. But although the storms are real and the pains are real, I realised the storm doesn't always last. Even the darkest of storms will pass. The rain will stop. The flood will subside. The clouds will part. The storm will end. And the sun will shine again.

There is hope. There is always hope if we believe. And just because the clouds have come, doesn't mean the sun has gone. It's still there. The sun still shines. We just don't see it because the clouds have blinded us. But we must know that it's still there. It's just a matter of time before we see the storm with its cloud give way. And the sun shines on our lives again.”

‘Through The Rain' is dedicated to all who bravely face each new day in anticipation of the silver linings. May you find the hope that will be to you ‘a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.'

- Oops Asia

All proceeds from the sales of this EP will go towards the rebuilding of communities
that were ravaged by the Asian Tsunami on 26 December 2004 .

  Favoured Chick – Barbara Tipper
  Favoured Chick – Barbara Tipper

(14 song lyrics written by Barbara Tipper, 9 melodies written by Ng Wah Lok and 5 melodies written by Barbara Tipper)

Favoured Chick is Barbara Tipper's debut album with 14 of her original lyrics. 9 melodies in this album were written by Malaysian songwriter Ng Wah Lok and the balance 5 melodies by Barbara herself. Wah Lok also helped as the Executive Producer for the melodies he composed. The album was produced in Malaysia by Timothy Lee.

The title track Favoured Chick is a very catchy song about how we are very special in God's eyes. The album cover actually shows Barbara dressed as a “favoured chick”. Lighthouse is a very passionate song about God's direction in our lives. God is our lighthouse especially during the stormy periods of our lives. This song has jazzy feel and was performed by Filipino jazz singer Esther Rebano. Immanuel Waltz is a Christmas song about dancing during the birth of Jesus. Barbara crafted the lyrics of this song creatively and Wah Lok has actually put a waltz beat to the melody. Birds and Bees is children's song. The song is about various animals, people and all creation praising God.

Barbara's own melodies have a fun side to them. Her song Don't forget to bring your umbrella is an illustration of our walk in this world. There will always be rain and hence we need God's umbrella. In another of her songs called Alias, she shares about how God gives all of us a new name when we become children of God.

Favoured Chick is a very interesting album with excellent lyrics and melodies. Barbara displays an ability to write interesting, creative and philosophical lyrics.

I Thank You Lord – Meechang Tuie

Meechang is a songwriter from Sarawak who has written more than 40 songs. In the album I Thank You Lord, he shares some of his most precious songs birthed at a time of personal tragedy in his life. In 1998, he lost 3 of his children. During this tragedy, he wrote the song By Your Stripes sharing about his inner healing from God. The title track I Thank You Lord reflects his eternal gratitude to Jesus for all the things that happened in his life. In his own words Meechang says, “I loved my children very much but He loved them even more”. Other interesting songs in the album are Simon Peter and Jesus I love your name. It is amazing that in the midst of great sorrow, Meechang has reached down deep into his heart to write some passionate songs about his walk with God and how tragedy has not dampened his love and passion for God.

Originating from Penang, Lucy has again gathered a team of young musicians and singers from several churches to do this recording.

In the title track DREAMS ,Lucy brings a message that we must all dare to dream the impossible dream especially if our dreams are given by God.   Brand New World – Juwita Suwito

Once is a while, a voice surfaces to capture hearts. If there is such a voice from Malaysia, I would say it must be from Juwita. Born in Melaka, of Indonesian-Singaporean descent, Juwita has been in music all her life. From winning her Performance Certificate at age 15, to singing back up for Sheila Majid and Ning Baizura or solo performances in Australia, Planet Hollywood or Colors of the Rainbow, music naturally flows from her soul.

Brand New World is Juwita’s first solo album. One may be wondering why it took so long for someone to discover this beautiful voice. Perhaps, they have saved the best for last. Juwita wrote 5 songs in this album herself. One of her own outstanding songs, You in me is a beautiful ballad. Juwita rendered this song with such emotion and precision, it will certain touch the hearts of the listener. Another beautiful song is Part of a fool written by a Taiwanese song writer. SMS is modern and catchy song. In the last track, Benediction, Juwita displays her extraordinary vocal ability. The lead vocals and harmony of Benediction are beautifully executed.

The album is produced by Juwita’s brother Aubrey Suwito who himself is a sought after music producer . Aubrey has selected fine musicians like Steve Thornton, Andy Peterson, Jamie Wilson and Lewis Pragasam to play for this album.

This is certainly an album you want to add to your collection.

POWER - Live Worship by SIBKL

This is the album I was waiting for after I met Nick Lee who had just returned back from United States to set up a recording studio in Malaysia. He brought back a host of recording experience from United States and this is his first major project in Malaysia. Nick produced the album and arranged all the songs.

The title track Power is a catchy song and reflects the dynamism of SIBKL. SIB is one of the fastest growing churches in Malaysia. Power uses all the modern guitars and arrangement to bring out the dynamic beat in the song. Nick personally wrote this title track.

The live worship was led by Daniel Tan who also wrote the song Fly like an eagle. Pastor Kay Lee wrote In Spite of Who I am and Cross Over and adds her beautiful voice to these songs. Other original songs were written by SIB members , Osbert Chin, Christopher Chew, Weng Onn and Tabitha Kong.

This is certainly and excellent production.

COOL by Fungates (Clarine Chun and Lim Chee Peng)

Fungates is already well known for their ministry among children. They run Superkids children's programs all over the country. This album is a recording of some of the songs by their Fungates founder Clarine Chun and her fellow worker Lim Chee Peng. Chee Peng produced this album. Many of the songs are good for children's worship.

The title track COOL is an interesting song with a mix of rap and fun. I think it reflects Clarine's ideas for children and how there should be fun in education. Children will love this song. There are other very good songs for children like Love Never fails, You are my friend and Awesome God. Chee Peng performed lead vocals to most of the songs. He also wrote some of the worship songs in the album I love You so and As I worship You O Lord and even a dedication song to Clarine entitled You are the one.

Mayya and her husband Igor are both highly accomplished professional musicians. Her compositions in this album demonstrates the beauty of simplicity as well as the subtle musical sophistication expressed in a wide repertoire of styles and interesting flavors. Mayya excels in the violin and plays the instrument with great sensitivity and colors

This albums contains very worshipful songs, and is a mix of instrumentals and vocals.
Mayya plays violin solos and Igor plays the Bassoon. The song Dance to the Golden Rain came from a dream Mayya had where she saw shiny showers of rain in the sky. That dream inspired the title of the album Golden Rain.

He has been singing the songs in the evangelistic rallies both in and out of the country, impacting lives everywhere he goes.   We Reverence You - The Vineyard Church, Johor Bahru

We Reverence You (Jing Wei Ni) is the debut album of Vineyard Church, Johor Bahru. It contains 15 Mandarin songs and 2 English songs. The album is produced by Michael Mui with band members from the church. The Vineyard Church is one of the fastest growing churches in Johor Bahru. The Chinese congregation is led by Pastor Lim Hong Lian. Pastor Lim believes revival and the manifestation of God's presence will only come when God's people return to the basics, that is to worship God in spirit and in truth. Because the Vineyard Church has discovered God's presence in worship, many are coming back to the Lord at nearly every service. In some cases, entire families are saved.

Their weekly services are held like grand celebrations unto the Lord, where people are set free through spontaneous worship. The songs in this CD are birthed through the cries of the people coming back to reverence God, giving our Lord Jesus Christ all the glory and honor He deserves.

Lucy is currently the music director of Georgetown Baptist Church and she also helps her husband Aun, who's a youth pastor. "I was a classically trained musician from Trinity College of Music, London, but when I was

HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME – JORDAN RIVERS

“Hallowed be Your name” is a recording of all original songs by Jordan Rivers. Jordan is regarded by many Malaysians as one of the best Christian lead guitarist in the country. Some of the songs in this album were recorded in the United States. The title track “Hallowed by Your name” was written in 1993 after God spoke to Jordan, a professional musician to use the “rod in his hands”…his guitar. This album seeks to reflect the awesomeness of the great I AM.

The album was birthed after a year of prayer and fasting. During this time, God had to totally do away with the old wineskin in Jordan Rivers and fill him anew. Most of the other songs were written around 1993 when God showed Jordan how he must live a life depending of God’s Holy Spirit and power. Although recording commenced in 1995, the album was released only in 2002. “God has his perfect timing”, says Jordan Rivers.

Beyond This Sunset - Youth from Church of Shekinah Glory

This is a tribute album which the Youth of Shekinah Glory recorded in memory of their 3 members who were killed in a waterfall accident. The 3 youths who died were Kyyern Lim (1984-1999), Micah Chan (1982-1999) and Mervyn Tan (1980-1999). Although the album was recorded about a year after the death, the songs still reflect sadness and the struggles of the youth as they overcame this tragedy. As the album was done mainly by youths, the recordings cannot be compared to other higher budget professional recordings. Nevertheless, the sincerity of the authors and the emotional heart beat of the songs are very real and you can almost feel the sadness in some of the songs. Perhaps the lyrics of the title track written by Kysern who lost his younger brother tells the whole story.

You will never be erased from the pages of my memories, And I know beyond this sunset, there will come a day when I will see you face to face again
Though years may pass and seasons change
Here by my side you will remain
I'll hold you close I won't let go
Though tears may fall I will be strong
I'll hold on to hope, I'll carry on
There's comfort within this I know
I'll meet you at the mountain top someday
And you will never fade away.

Excerpts from the song "Beyond this Sunset" written by Kysern Lim

The other songs in the album were written by Amelia Tan, Diana Chong, David Gan, Peter Teh, Alex Tan, Lisa Gan, Yin Har and Pamela Khoo. This is indeed a very emotional recording.
