WAH LOK'S WORSHIP DEVOTIONS

Wah Lok
Wah Lok

Welcome to my devotional page. I have written these devotions specially for those involved in the worship ministry. As you read them daily, I hope you will walk closer with God. Try to do one devotion per day and not all at one go. I pray my devotional thoughts will help you dedicate your music to God.

DAY 22 - IS YOUR MUSIC DIET BALANCED ?

Scripture Reading: Eph 5:18-21

Eph 5:18-21
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Col 3:15-16
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Discussion

There is very little teaching in the New Testament on worship. Above are two of the rare verses on worship in the NT. Paul encourages us to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Psalms are praises to God and testimonies of God's character recorded for us in the Bible. Hymns are writings by men of God. It could be a praise song or also a proclamation of God's character. Spiritual songs are spontaneous songs. It may be a song of praise (worship) or a song of the Lord (prophetic). To have a balance diet, you need all the different categories of songs.

The church today has focussed mainly on praise and worship choruses. Many of these songs have very shallow lyrics. We have forgotten how to sing hymns and read Psalms in our worship services. So many Christians have grown up on an imbalance diet of songs. Sing hymns again. Read the Psalms. Use one hymn every Sunday Service.

Prayer

Father I pray you will help me to have a balanced diet of songs for my worship services. I pray the songs will change lives and not just make people feel good. Help me to appreciate the depth of the lyrics found in the hymns.
